TUTA and DLC Directing Workshop: The second event in DLC’s newly expanded programming
On Saturday, June 18, DLC hosted TUTA Theatre Chicago for a daylong workshop delving into TUTA’s unique directing process.
The day began with a an excerpt from TUTA’s most recent Lab, which had performed the previous evening. TUTA Artistic Director Jacqueline Stone then spent the rest of the day leading a group of TUTA ensemble members and DLC guest directors through a series of acting and devising exercises. TUTA actors were available for directors to work with in the second half of the day as they put some of their new skills to the test, devising short pieces and experimenting with applying their new tools to text.
TUTA Theatre utilizes a process that is more akin to the eastern European style of directing; that is, a longer and more avant-garde process that leans outside-in rather than inside-out. The workshop provided directors with tools to bring actors together into this style of working and to develop character in a more physical way.
