DirectorsLabChicago and Victory Gardens Theater co-hosted Choosing Seasons on Monday, February 22, 2016.
This moderated discussion centered around the process of picking material for a season and how that process is guided by local, national and worldwide events.
If you missed Choosing Seasons, you missed one heck of a town hall! Directors and artistic directors from theaters large and small gathered at Victory Gardens for well over two hours of animated and intelligent conversation.
Together, theater-makers tackled the challenges associated with selecting material for a season, from resources and planning to audience engagement and marketing. There was some tremendous discussion around being grounded in the “why” that drives you to select material in the first place, and what to do when your why (or your audience’s) has changed from the time a show is planned to the time it’s presented. Different formats of producing were presented by several who are having success working outside the traditional seasonal structure.
All in all, it was a fantastic evening, and these photos by resident photographer Anita Evans capture the spirit and collaboration of the night perfectly.
