The Director and The Designer
Each year, the Lab chooses a theme based on ideas and questions that have arisen from the prior Lab. This year, we have chosen to focus on the Director and the Designer. The relationship between the director and the designers is vital but often under-developed within the production process. Sometimes the designer is one person or, at times, an entire team. In a few instances, the director decides to wear both hats and takes on the design of certain (if not all!) elements. No matter the size of the budget or the constraints of the performance space, the design can enhance the director’s vision or overwhelm it. How and when does one begin discussion with the designers and navigate communication between the team throughout the production process? How do we find balance between the elements of design and the clarity of the storytelling? How can we further employ design to connect with our audience before and after the performance?
Together, with this year’s Lab directors, we intend to put forth dozens of models in hopes that they will take the ideas that inspire them, make them their own, and incorporate them into their productions and theatre companies. Throughout the week, we will explore the relationship and impact the designer has on our work. We will examine the fundamental design elements of set, costumes, props, lighting, and sound. The Lab will also consider puppet design, make-up design and mask work, violence design, and projections as part of the design aesthetic – as well as the less used tactile design of igniting the sense of smell, taste, and touch. We will explore the more practical sides of design including marketing and graphic design, social media, directorial portfolios, business cards, and websites – and discuss ways in which visual dramaturgy through program and lobby design can further invest (or turn off!) an audience.
